Martin Charns, D.B.A. joined Javitch Associates in 1984. In addition to his consulting assignments, he is professor and director of the Program on Health Policy and Management at the Boston University School of Public Health. He is also director of the Management Decision and Research Center, a national center, conducting management research, consultation, and information dissemination in the Health Services Research and Development Service of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Charns is a graduate of Harvard Business School, where he earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Business Administration with specialization in Organizational Behaviors. He earned his B.S. in mathematics at Case Institute of Technology.
He has over thirty years of consulting experience, specializing in organization design and change with numerous health care organizations and industrial firms. Equally interesting, he is a frequent speaker at educational programs in the U.S. and abroad. Marty has been Chairperson of the Health Care Administration Division of the Academy of Management and has served on the national advisory committee of the Strengthening Hospital Nursing Program, sponsored jointly by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
He has co-authored three books, Health Care Organizations: A Model for Management (Prentice-Hall, 1983 with Marguerite Schaefer), Collaborative Management in Health Care (Jossey-Bass, 1993 with Laura Smith Tewksbury), and Collaboration in Health Care (American Hospital Publishing, 1995 with Cheryl Stetler). His other written contributions include many articles, book chapters and case studies (over 60 of them) on organization design and change.
He was recently honored by the Academy of Management for the best research paper in the Health Care Management Division for his work on the “Patterns of Coordination and Clinical Outcomes: A study of Surgical Services.” His current research includes a national evaluation of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Pursuing Perfection program, studies of service lines in both VA and the private sector, and studies of organizational change and of organizational factors related to patient safety. |
